The first thing people will demand from you in meeting you for the first time is your story. They want to know who you are, what you do, where you’ve been, what you know and how interesting and inspiring your life is.
If you have an amazing story, then people will engage and pay you simply because your life story is inspiring.
I moved from a scared-to-the-bones speaker to one of the greatest speakers of my time. Now I earn five to six figures to motivate, train, teach and mentor all kinds of audiences.
I moved from a timid, colourless, uncreative scribbler to a poet, then to a lyricist, then to a staff writer in a publishing firm. Now I earn five to six figures from creating content that sell online and offline, while helping others do the same.
I moved from a lowly background as an unknown, struggling youth looking for people to help me to a brand that people now depend upon for help. Now I earn five, six, seven figures as a problem solver and solution provider working with individual and corporate clients.
Wow! All because I tell my story compellingly. And I get paid simply because my story is so inspiring.
3 TRUTHS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD
The world today is different from the world just a decade ago. Globalization brought with it new ways of thinking, connecting and working. According to Jeff Goins, there are three reasons why becoming an expert of your own story is essential:
1. Nobody Cares About Your Resume Or CV
For many professional fields, the resume is dead. This is especially true for creatives.
What people want to know is your story. What happens when I Google you? What does your “bio” say?
Future employers want to know: What are your life experiences, and how have they shaped you?
You need to be ready to tell them.
2. Storytelling Is The New Marketing
Think about the nonprofit and for-profit organizations you know that are really making a difference. Chances are, they’re telling a compelling story. For instance Apple‘s story is about the underdog eventually beating out the competitor who wronged him. Every customer gets to live out this same story each time they buy a Mac or iPhone.
Influential organizations and individuals tell a story that is so compelling others can’t help but want to join it.
3. You Don’t Know Your Story As Well As You Think
Telling your story helps you make sense of your life — why certain events happened the way they did. You begin to examine what has happened to and through you. You begin to make sense of who you are.
Telling your story can be incredibly therapeutic, and the practice often leads to greater confidence and understanding of self.
Most people don’t take the time to do this. They take their stories for granted; they don’t steward them.
Take the time to learn your story. We need it. And we need you to tell it. If we’re going to be changed by it, you need to tell your story well.
Only the people that tell unique stories build wealthy, lasting brands. Go ask Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson, etc.
Everyone has a story to tell. You have a story to tell, and it deserves to be told well.
